In 1990, Fearon and Vogelstein proposed a progressive development model of colon cancer and presented some of the key genetic changes associ-ated with the stages of progression (Fearon and Vogelstein,1990; Grady,2004) (Figure 1).

‘Vogelgram’ Colon cancer first begins with the presentation of polyps which are benign neoplasms. The slow polyp to cancer progression sequence often allows for the detection and removal of polyps early, before they undergo malignant transformation. Bert Vogelstein In 1949, cancer researcher Bert Vogelstein was born at the Johns Hopkins Hospital—just two blocks from where he works today. When asked why he became interested in science, Vogelstein replies, “How could anyone not be?” The 'Vogelgram' represents a word model, grounded in the linear logic that is typical of this approach. It can, however, form the schematic framework for mechanistic, quantitative models that 308 Followers, 442 Following, 575 Posts - See Instagram photos and videos from Nate Vogel (@vogelgram) ‘Vogelgram’ Colon cancer first begins with the presentation of polyps which are benign neoplasms. Overall, the paradigm set out by these two investigators has estab-lished principles that have enabled an understanding of the complexity of cancer, especially in providing a strong rationale for early cancer detection and intervention. In fact, when investigators uncover sequential changes in the progression from normal to malignant, they often refer to this as a “Vogelgram”. Dr. Vogelstein and his team identified the genes responsible for hereditary colorectal cancers, leading to unprecedented insights into the genetic and biochemical events that initiate solid tumors.
